Test Process and Preparation
The test evaluates 5 basic criteria: Skin color (Appearance), Heart rate (Pulse), Reflex response (Grimace), Muscle tone (Activity), and Respiratory effort (Respiration). Each criterion is assigned a score of 0, 1, or 2.
The total score ranges from 0 to 10. Scores between 7 and 10 indicate that the baby's condition is excellent or very good, scores between 4 and 6 indicate that the baby may need respiratory or circulatory support, and scores of 3 and below indicate that urgent resuscitation intervention is required.
No, the Apgar scoring is purely observational and does not involve any invasive intervention on the baby. The heart is merely listened to with a stethoscope, and the baby's physical movements are observed.
