General Information About the Test
Test Process and Preparation
A high test result (prolonged time) means that the blood clots more slowly than normal. This condition increases the risk of bleeding; it can be caused by liver diseases, coagulation factor deficiencies, or the use of blood thinners.
Generally, fasting is not required. However, the doctor must be strictly informed about all medications being used (especially aspirin, heparin, coumadin, and painkillers) as they will directly affect the test results.
Special substances that initiate clotting are added to a blood sample taken from a vein in the arm, and the time is measured in seconds using a stopwatch in the laboratory.
