ASO Test

General Information About the Test

The ASO (Anti-Streptolysin O) test is a blood test that indicates whether an individual has had an infection caused by group A Beta-hemolytic streptococcus bacteria (commonly known as a strep infection or tonsillitis) in the body. It is requested to evaluate the risks of serious complications, such as rheumatic fever or kidney inflammation (glomerulonephritis), even after the infection has resolved.

Test Process and Preparation

Application of the ASO test and information about the process.
What does a high ASO value indicate?

An elevated ASO level proves that the individual has recently had a streptococcal infection (e.g., tonsillitis or strep throat). However, it does not solely indicate an active disease, but rather that the body has previously produced antibodies against that microbe.

Is it only performed on children?

Because strep infections and the subsequent development of rheumatic fever are most commonly seen in school-aged children, it is typically requested in pediatrics; however, it can also be administered to symptomatic adults.

Should blood be drawn on an empty stomach?

Fasting is generally not a requirement for the test. It can be evaluated by drawing blood from the arm at any time of the day.
