AST (Aspartate Aminotransferase)

General Information About the Test

AST (Aspartate Aminotransferase) is an enzyme found in various tissues of the body, primarily in the liver, heart muscle, and skeletal muscles. When cell damage occurs in these organs or tissues, the AST enzyme leaks into the bloodstream, causing its levels to rise. It is typically checked in routine biochemistry panels along with the ALT enzyme to evaluate liver health (e.g., hepatitis, cirrhosis).

Test Process and Preparation

The AST enzyme test and points to consider.

AST levels can rise above normal in situations such as liver diseases (fatty liver, viral hepatitis), heavy alcohol consumption, severe muscle injuries, excessive exercise, or a heart attack.

No. Unlike the ALT enzyme, AST is not specific solely to the liver; it is also present in muscle and heart tissue. Therefore, when elevated AST is detected, additional tests may be necessary to find its source.

An 8-12 hour fast is recommended before blood collection. In addition, since strenuous physical sports performed prior to the test can cause an increase in AST of muscular origin, excessive exertion should be avoided 1-2 days before the test.
