BERA / ABR Test

General Information About the Test

BERA (Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry) or ABR is an objective hearing test that measures the electrical responses of the auditory nerve and auditory pathways in the brainstem to sound. Since it does not require the patient's response or active participation, it is the "gold standard" method for diagnosing and determining the degree of hearing loss, especially in newborns, young children, and uncooperative adults.

Test Process and Preparation

The application stages of the BERA test and patient preparation.
How is the BERA test administered?

Small electrodes are attached to the patient's forehead and behind the ears. Click sounds of varying intensities are transmitted to the ear via headphones, and the electrical waves transmitted by the auditory nerve to the brain are recorded on a computer.

Is sleep mandatory during the test for infants?

Yes. In order to obtain accurate electrical measurements, there must be no muscle movements (crying, thrashing). Therefore, the test is performed while the infant or child is in completely natural sleep, or under mild sedation (sleep medication) administered under a physician's supervision.

Does the test cause pain or harm?

It is an absolutely painless and harmless procedure. It does not involve any radiation. The transmitted sounds are at decibel levels that will not harm the ear.
