Beta HCG Test

General Information About the Test

Beta HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) is a hormone that begins to be produced by the cells surrounding the embryo (placenta) following conception and enters the bloodstream. The Beta HCG test, also known as a "blood pregnancy test," is the earliest and most definitive method available for diagnosing pregnancy.

Test Process and Preparation

Blood collection process and timing for the pregnancy test.
When does the test yield the earliest result?

The Beta HCG hormone begins to rise in the blood approximately 8-10 days after fertilization (intercourse). Thus, pregnancy can be detected with a blood test even a few days before the expected menstrual period.

What is the difference from a urine test?

Urine tests (home pregnancy tests) wait for the hormone to be filtered from the blood into the urine, which takes time and involves a margin of error. The blood test, on the other hand, provides the amount of hormone in the blood as a numerical value, offering near 100% accuracy.

Is fasting or a specific time of day important?

Fasting is not required for Beta HCG measurement. It can be easily and quickly analyzed from blood drawn at any time of the day.
