Computed Tomography (CT)

General Information About the Test

Computed Tomography (CT) is an advanced radiological test that combines X-rays and sophisticated computer technologies to create millimeter-thin, cross-sectional, and three-dimensional images of the body's internal organs, bones, and soft tissues. It provides much more detailed and rapid results compared to standard X-rays in diagnosing trauma, internal bleeding, tumors, infections, and vascular diseases.

Test Process and Preparation

CT scan process and radiological safety warnings.
Is the scan performed in an enclosed space?

No. Unlike MRI machines, CT machines are not long, enclosed tunnels but rather shaped like a wide ring (donut). Because the scan takes only seconds, patients with claustrophobia generally do not experience any issues.

What is contrast-enhanced tomography?

It is a scan performed by administering an iodine-based contrast agent intravenously prior to the procedure, allowing tissues and blood vessels to be distinguished much more clearly. Fasting and kidney function tests (e.g., creatinine) are required before this procedure.

Is there a radiation risk?

The CT imaging process uses X-rays and therefore involves a certain amount of radiation. However, new-generation devices feature technology designed to keep the dose received by the patient to a minimum. It is not performed on pregnant women unless strictly necessary.

When will my tomography result be ready?

In emergency department visits (e.g., suspected brain hemorrhage or trauma), CT results are evaluated by radiologists within minutes. Detailed reporting of routine or contrast-enhanced scans for outpatient clinic patients is generally completed on the same day or the next day.
