Bronchoscopy

General Information About the Test

Bronchoscopy is the procedure of directly examining the inside of the airways and lungs with the help of a thin, flexible tube (bronchoscope) equipped with a light and a high-resolution camera at its tip. It is performed by Pulmonologists for the diagnosis of unexplained chronic coughs, coughing up blood (hemoptysis), suspicious spots (masses) seen in the lungs, and, if necessary, to take a biopsy (tissue sample) from these areas.

Test Process and Preparation

Bronchoscopy procedure and patient preparation stages.
How is a bronchoscopy performed?

The procedure is generally performed with sedation to induce mild sleepiness for the patient's comfort, along with numbing of the throat (local anesthesia). The device is passed through the vocal cords via the nose or mouth and advanced into the bronchial tubes of the lungs.

Is it used only for diagnostic purposes?

No, in addition to establishing a diagnosis, it is also used for therapeutic purposes. Procedures such as removing foreign bodies lodged in the airways, clearing accumulated thick secretions (sputum), or placing stents in narrowed airways can also be performed.

What should be considered before and after the procedure?

Eating and drinking must be completely ceased at least 6-8 hours before the procedure. Since the local anesthesia applied to the throat temporarily weakens the swallowing reflex, nothing should be eaten or drunk for at least 2 hours after the procedure.
