CA 125 Test

General Information About the Test

CA 125 (Cancer Antigen 125) is a protein found in the blood that is primarily produced by ovarian cells. It is an important tumor marker test used particularly to help diagnose certain gynecological tumors, mainly ovarian cancer, and to monitor the success of applied cancer treatments (such as chemotherapy).

Test Process and Preparation

CA 125 tumor marker measurement and evaluation processes.
Does elevated CA 125 definitively indicate cancer?

No. An elevated CA 125 test result alone does not establish a cancer diagnosis. This value can also rise in benign conditions such as endometriosis (chocolate cysts), fibroids, pelvic infections, and even during a normal menstrual period.

Can it be used as a screening test?

It is not recommended to be used as a routine cancer screening test in healthy women with no complaints. It is generally requested for high-risk groups, such as those with a family history of ovarian cancer, or when a suspicious mass is detected on an ultrasound.

How is the test performed?

It does not require any preparation or fasting. It is measured in a laboratory setting using a simple blood sample drawn from a vein in the arm.
