CA 15-3 Test

General Information About the Test

CA 15-3 (Cancer Antigen 15-3) is a tumor marker produced by breast cells and measured in the blood to monitor the course of breast cancer. It is used in patients diagnosed with breast cancer to evaluate the effectiveness of surgical, chemotherapy, or radiotherapy treatments and to track whether the disease has spread (metastasized) to other parts of the body (bones, liver, etc.).

Test Process and Preparation

CA 15-3 measurement and breast cancer monitoring process.
Can breast cancer be diagnosed with the CA 15-3 test?

No. CA 15-3 is not a good screening test for detecting breast cancer at an early stage. Mammography and Breast Ultrasound are the gold standards for early diagnosis. This test is mostly used for the clinical follow-up of already diagnosed patients.

What does a decrease in the value mean?

A progressive decrease in the CA 15-3 level measured during the treatment process or its return to normal limits indicates that the tumor is shrinking and the body is responding positively to the treatment.

Does it rise in conditions other than breast cancer?

Yes. Mild increases in CA 15-3 levels in the blood can also be seen in non-cancerous conditions such as liver diseases (cirrhosis, hepatitis), benign breast diseases, and rarely lung or ovarian diseases.
