D-Dimer Test

General Information About the Test

D-Dimer is a protein fragment (particle) that emerges during the process of a blood clot dissolving and breaking down in the body. A high D-Dimer level in the blood indicates that an abnormal and significant clotting (thrombosis) event has occurred inside a blood vessel. It is a test frequently used in emergency departments to rule out life-threatening diseases such as Deep Vein Thrombosis (clots in leg veins) and Pulmonary Embolism (clots in the lungs).

Test Process and Preparation

D-Dimer test and the process in case of suspected thrombosis.
What does a normal test result mean?

The most valuable feature of the D-Dimer test is that it is 'exclusionary'. If the D-Dimer result is normal (negative) in a suspected patient, the probability of that patient having a large vascular clot is ruled out with an accuracy of over 95%.

Does a high test result definitively mean a clot?

No. Elevated D-Dimer is seen not only with blood clots but also during pregnancy, advanced age, trauma, recent surgeries, severe infections, and cancer. Imaging such as an ultrasound or CT scan is essential for a definitive diagnosis.

Is fasting required for the test?

Since it is typically requested in emergency situations, fasting is not required. It is measured quickly in the laboratory using a tube of blood drawn from the arm.
