Bone Density Test (DEXA)

General Information About the Test

The Bone Density Test, also known as Bone Densitometry (DEXA), is a highly sensitive and painless radiological imaging method used to measure the mineral density, thickness, and strength of bones. It is considered the gold standard worldwide for the early diagnosis of 'Osteoporosis', a disease in which bones weaken and become brittle due to aging or hormonal changes.

Test Process and Preparation

Bone measurement (DEXA) scan process and preparations.
Who should get a bone density test?

It is routinely recommended for postmenopausal women (especially over 65), those with a history of early menopause, individuals who have experienced unexplained bone fractures, and patients receiving long-term cortisone treatment.

How long does the scan take, does it hurt?

It is completely painless and does not require an injection. While the patient lies on their back on the machine's table, the arm of the device typically passes over the lumbar region and hip (femoral neck) to take the measurement. The procedure is completed in a short time, such as 10-15 minutes.

Is any special preparation required?

Fasting is not required, but you are asked to wear comfortable clothes without metal buttons or zippers on the day of the scan. In addition, it is recommended not to take calcium pills or vitamins for at least 24 hours before the scan.
