Fecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT)

General Information About the Test

The Fecal Occult Blood Test is a quick and simple laboratory test performed on a stool sample to detect trace amounts of bleeding that are not visible to the eye and can only be detected microscopically or chemically. It is the most widely used life-saving screening method for the early diagnosis of colorectal (colon) cancer and polyps, especially in individuals aged 50 and over.

Test Process and Preparation

Details on the sample collection process and the fecal occult blood test.
Does a positive test result indicate cancer?

Absolutely not. A positive test indicates bleeding in the digestive system, but this bleeding can also be caused by hemorrhoids, an anal fissure, a stomach ulcer, or intestinal infections.

If the result is positive, what is the next step?

In every patient with a positive occult blood test, a Colonoscopy (or Endoscopy depending on the situation) must be performed to definitively observe the actual source of the bleeding (tumor, polyp, or inflammation) and take a biopsy if necessary.

Is a diet or preparation required for the test?

With developing new generation immunity-based (immunochemical) tests, there is no need to apply a prior ban on red meat or iron supplements (diet). While on a normal diet, the patient takes a small sample into a special container provided by the hospital and delivers it to the laboratory.
