It can be performed on the neck vessels (Carotid Doppler), arm and leg vessels (Venous or Arterial Doppler), kidney vessels (Renal Doppler), and the umbilical cord to measure the blood flow between the placenta and the baby during pregnancy.
Absolutely not. Doppler ultrasound is a completely non-invasive method. It does not contain radiation, needles, or contrast agents (medication). The examination is done with a probe by simply applying standard ultrasound gel to the skin.
In Renal Doppler scans where intra-abdominal vessels (e.g., kidney vessels) are examined, an 8-10 hour fast is required so that intestinal gases do not distort the image. However, no preparation or fasting is required for examinations of the arm, leg, or neck regions.
