EEG (Electroencephalography) Test

General Information About the Test

EEG (Electroencephalography) is a fundamental neurological test used to measure and record the electrical activity of the brain (brain waves). It is safely used by neurologists in the diagnosis of sleep disorders, loss of consciousness, brain inflammations (encephalitis), and memory problems, particularly epilepsy (seizure disorder).

Test Process and Preparation

EEG recording process and considerations for the patient.
How is an EEG recording performed?

Small electrodes (wired discs) are attached to the patient's scalp using a special gel. The device transmits the very low-intensity electrical signals emitted by the brain to a computer screen in the form of waves. The recording takes an average of 20-40 minutes.

Is the procedure painful or is electricity applied?

Absolutely not. The EEG device does not transmit electricity to the brain; it only records the electricity naturally produced by the brain. It is a completely painless and harmless procedure.

What preparation is needed before the recording?

The hair must be clean and dry, and styling products such as gel or hairspray must not be used. It is preferred that the patient is not fasting. In some cases, if a "Sleep EEG" is requested, the patient may be asked to remain awake the night before.
