eGFR Test

General Information About the Test

eGFR (Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate) is one of the most critical parameters indicating how well the kidneys are filtering (cleaning) the blood. It is generally not measured directly; it is calculated by entering the "Creatinine" value measured in the blood into a mathematical formula along with factors such as the patient's age, gender, and body structure. It is used in the staging of chronic kidney failure.

Test Process and Preparation

Details and evaluation of the eGFR measurement.
What does a low eGFR value indicate?

A low value indicates that the filtering capacity of the kidneys has decreased and there is a deterioration in kidney function (kidney failure). In healthy individuals, this value is generally 90 and above.

Why is this test important?

Kidney diseases generally do not show any symptoms until they reach the final stage (they progress silently). The eGFR value is the most reliable way to detect kidney damage at an early stage, even before symptoms begin.

Is fasting required for the test?

Since the eGFR calculation is performed using a routine biochemistry panel (creatinine), it is generally carried out with blood drawn from the arm after an 8-10 hour fast in the morning.
