Test Process and Preparation
While an ECG measures the "electrical" system (rhythm) of the heart, Echocardiography is an ultrasound that shows the "mechanical" structure of the heart (its muscles, valves, and contraction power). They are different tests that complement each other.
The patient lies on their left side. The doctor applies ultrasound gel to the chest area and examines the heart from different angles using the device's probe. Since the procedure works entirely with sound waves, it does not involve radiation and is highly safe for pregnant women as well.
Fasting or discontinuation of any medication is not required for a standard (transthoracic, performed over the chest) echocardiography. The procedure takes an average of 15-20 minutes.
