MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)

General Information About the Test

MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is an advanced diagnostic method that images tissues, organs, and bone structures in the body in extraordinary detail using giant magnets and radio waves, without the use of radiation (X-rays). It offers vastly superior soft tissue details compared to tomography, particularly in the examination of the brain, spinal cord, musculoskeletal system (meniscus, hernia), and joint ligaments.

How long does an MRI scan take?

Depending on the number and detail of the areas to be examined, scans generally take between 15 and 45 minutes. It is essential for the patient to remain completely motionless inside the device during this time to obtain high-quality images.

Who cannot have an MRI scan?

Because the device generates a very strong magnetic field (magnet), patients with older pacemakers, brain aneurysm clips, inner ear implants, or irremovable magnetic metal shrapnel fragments in their bodies cannot undergo an MRI. Platinum and titanium prostheses are generally MRI-compatible, but the technician must still be informed.

What is contrast-enhanced MRI?

It is a type of scan performed by administering a "Gadolinium"-based contrast agent intravenously from the arm during the scan in order to distinguish tumors, infections, or vascular structures much more clearly.

Why does it make so much noise during an MRI scan?

High electrical currents passing through the giant magnets in MRI machines cause the coils to vibrate rapidly, producing loud clicking and knocking noises. For this reason, patients are given headphones or earplugs during the scan.

What is the difference between an Open MRI and a Closed MRI?

Open MRI machines have open sides and are designed for patients with claustrophobia or who are severely overweight. However, because closed (tunnel-type) MRI machines have a higher magnetic strength (Tesla value), they provide physicians with much clearer and finely detailed images.
