EMG (Electromyography)

General Information About the Test

EMG (Electromyography) is a neurological test that examines the electrical health of the nerves and muscles in our body, detecting nerve compressions and muscle diseases. It is performed to understand whether neck and lower back hernias are compressing the nerves, and to diagnose nerve compression in the wrist (Carpal Tunnel Syndrome), muscle wasting, and nerve ending damage (neuropathy) due to diabetes.

Test Process and Preparation

Administration of the EMG test and what the patient needs to consider.
How is the EMG test performed?

The procedure is typically a two-stage process. In the first stage (nerve conduction study), electrodes are placed on the skin, and very mild, tolerable electrical currents are applied to the nerves. In the second stage (needle EMG), sterile, very fine-tipped needles resembling acupuncture needles are inserted into the muscles to record the muscle's electrical activity.

Is the test very painful?

Patients generally describe the mild electrical currents as a tingling or mild shock sensation. In the needle portion, a slight stinging sensation is felt, but this pain is at a level easily tolerated by most patients.

Is preparation required before the test?

Fasting is not required; it is recommended to come on a full stomach. However, it is crucial not to apply creams, lotions, or ointments to the skin on the day of the test, as they disrupt electrical conduction and degrade the test's quality. Additionally, patients taking blood thinners or using pacemakers must inform the performing physician.
