Test Process and Preparation
While a normal bronchoscopy only shows the inner surface of the airways, the ultrasound at the tip of the EBUS device allows visualization of hidden lymph nodes and masses behind the airway wall, enabling biopsies to be taken with millimetric precision without damaging blood vessels.
It is performed in an operating room or a special bronchoscopy unit by entering through the mouth while the patient is under mild sedation or general anesthesia. The procedure takes an average of 30-45 minutes.
It is generally a painless procedure. A mild sore throat or a very small amount of blood-tinged sputum (due to the biopsy) for a few days following the procedure is considered normal.
