Fetal Echocardiography

General Information About the Test

Fetal Echocardiography is a specific and advanced ultrasonography method that examines the heart, heart valves, chambers, and major blood vessels entering/exiting the heart of the baby in the womb in detail. It is a life-saving examination that allows congenital heart diseases to be detected months before birth, enabling the planning of emergency interventions and surgeries post-birth.

Test Process and Preparation

Fetal heart ultrasound (Fetal ECHO) procedure and details.
To whom and when should a Fetal ECHO be performed?

It is generally performed between the 18th and 24th weeks of pregnancy. It is administered by perinatology or pediatric cardiology specialists to expectant mothers with a family history of congenital heart disease, those who conceived via IVF, those with gestational diabetes, or when a suspicious heart finding is detected during a routine ultrasound.

What is the difference from a routine detailed ultrasound?

While a detailed ultrasound examines all of the baby's organs, fetal echocardiography focuses solely on the heart. The heart's rhythm, blood flow velocities, and vessel diameters are examined much more in-depth.

Is fasting required for the procedure?

Whether the expectant mother is fasting or has eaten does not affect the procedure. Furthermore, because it does not involve radiation, it is completely harmless to the baby.
