Fibrinogen

General Information About the Test

Fibrinogen is a fundamental blood protein produced by the liver that plays a key role in the blood clotting (coagulation) process. At the time of bleeding, it rapidly transforms into strong strands called "fibrin" to form a plug (clot) that stops the bleeding. Measuring the fibrinogen level in the blood is requested to evaluate unexplained bleeding disorders, clotting issues, and severe infections in the body.

Test Process and Preparation

Fibrinogen test blood drawing process and reference evaluation.

Fibrinogen is also an "acute-phase reactant". That is, when there is inflammation, infection, trauma, or tissue damage in the body, it rises rapidly like CRP. It can also be elevated during pregnancy and in smokers.

Fibrinogen levels can be low in cases of liver failure, severe malnutrition, or rare hereditary clotting disorders (afibrinogenemia). This condition is dangerous because it can cause bleeding to not stop even from a minor injury.

No special fasting is required for the fibrinogen test. It can be performed by drawing blood from the arm at any time of the day. However, if a blood transfusion has been received, the doctor must be informed as test results may be affected.
