Fluoroscopy

General Information About the Test

Fluoroscopy is a dynamic radiology technique that uses X-rays to display internal organs, bones, or blood vessels like a "moving" and "real-time" video. Unlike a standard X-ray which takes a momentary snapshot, fluoroscopy offers the ability to monitor the functioning of organs continuously, like a film recording. Particularly, the swallowing functions of the esophagus and gastrointestinal passages are examined using this method.

Test Process and Preparation

Fluoroscopy imaging stages and the contrast imaging process.
How is fluoroscopy performed?

Depending on the area to be examined, special contrast agents (medications), typically containing "Barium" or "Iodine" that appear bright on radiography, are either swallowed by the patient or administered intravenously. The progression of these medications through the organs is tracked live on a screen.

Is the radiation risk high?

Fluoroscopy involves slightly more radiation compared to a standard X-ray because the imaging continues for minutes, not seconds. However, modern digital devices are equipped with technology designed to minimize the radiation dose.

What is the preparation before the procedure?

If digestive system examinations (such as stomach or bowel films) are to be performed, the patient is usually required to fast from midnight (for 8-12 hours) to ensure their stomach and intestines are completely empty.
