General Information About the Test
Test Process and Preparation
FSH levels fluctuate continuously throughout the menstrual cycle. To measure the most accurate and reliable basal (baseline) value, the test is strictly required to be performed on the 2nd or 3rd day of menstruation (bleeding).
An FSH value in women that is higher than expected for their age indicates a decrease in ovarian reserve (egg quantity and quality). In menopausal women, the FSH level naturally reaches a permanently elevated state.
It is requested in male infertility investigations. If there is damage to the cells in the testicles that produce sperm (if production cannot occur), the pituitary gland increases FSH secretion to stimulate the testicles more. Therefore, high FSH indicates an impairment in sperm production.
