Stool Test

General Information About the Test

The Stool Test (Feces Analysis) is a fundamental laboratory examination that provides very important clues about the health of the digestive system. It involves examining a stool sample microscopically, chemically, and bacteriologically to find the source of gastrointestinal complaints such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and bloating.

Test Process and Preparation

Rules for providing a stool (feces) test sample.
What is examined in a stool test?

Undigested food residues, inflammatory cells (leukocytes), intestinal parasites (amoeba, giardia), intestinal worms, and their eggs in the stool are examined under a microscope.

What should be considered when providing a sample?

The stool sample must be collected in clean, dry plastic containers provided by the hospital. Urine or toilet water must absolutely not be mixed into the sample. For accurate results, it is important that the sample is delivered to the laboratory within 1-2 hours at the latest.

Is a single test sufficient to detect parasites?

Because intestinal parasites are not excreted with the stool every day, they may not appear in a single stool test. If the suspicion persists, physicians recommend performing the stool test 3 times consecutively on different days (the 3-day rule).
