General Information About the Test
Test Process and Preparation
Yes. GGT is the liver enzyme most sensitive to alcohol consumption. In chronic alcohol users, the GGT level can be very high even if the liver has not yet sustained permanent damage (cirrhosis). When alcohol is stopped, the values return to normal within weeks.
The ALP enzyme also increases in bone diseases. In a patient with an elevated ALP level, the GGT test is checked to determine whether this elevation originates from the bone or the liver. If the GGT is also high, the problem is definitively of liver/bile origin.
Since eating can temporarily affect the GGT level, albeit slightly, and because this test is usually requested along with other liver panels, performing it after an 8-10 hour fast yields the most accurate result.
