HBsAg

General Information About the Test

HBsAg (Hepatitis B Surface Antigen) is a protein found on the outermost surface of the Hepatitis B virus. Detecting this antigen in the blood is the most fundamental diagnostic test that definitively proves the individual has the active Hepatitis B virus in their body, is currently experiencing the disease, or has become a "Chronic Carrier" by being unable to clear the virus from their body.

Test Process and Preparation

Hepatitis B screening (HBsAg) and the meaning of the results.

A "Positive (Reactive)" HBsAg result indicates that the person is infected with the Hepatitis B virus and can transmit this virus to others through blood or sexual contact. They should immediately be placed under follow-up by an infectious diseases specialist.

No. In a person who has been successfully vaccinated against Hepatitis B and acquired immunity, HBsAg will be "Negative", while Anti-HBs, the protective antibody, will be "Positive".

Because this is an antigen (virus particle) detection test, it is not affected by nutritional status. It can be performed with a tube of blood drawn from the arm at any time and regardless of being full or fasting.
