HDL Test

General Information About the Test

HDL (High-Density Lipoprotein) is what is popularly known as "Good Cholesterol." Its function is to act like a "garbage truck," collecting excess cholesterol accumulated in the blood and on vessel walls and transporting it back to the liver to be excreted from the body. A high level of HDL in the blood acts as a protective shield against the risk of heart attacks, hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis), and strokes.

Test Process and Preparation

Good cholesterol (HDL) measurement and heart health evaluation.

A low HDL level is dangerous. For healthy protection, the target is for this value to be over 40 mg/dL for men and over 50 mg/dL for women. Values of 60 mg/dL and above provide excellent protection.

The most effective and proven ways to increase good cholesterol are regular aerobic exercise, quitting smoking, losing weight, and increasing the consumption of healthy fats in the diet, such as olive oil, walnuts, almonds, and fish (omega-3).

Yes. The HDL test is always requested as part of a "Lipid Profile" alongside LDL (Bad Cholesterol) and Triglycerides. To ensure that the fat levels in the blood are not affected by food, a strict fast of at least 10-12 hours (only water is allowed) is required before the test.
