Hemoglobin (HGB)

General Information About the Test

Hemoglobin is an iron-rich, fundamental protein located within the red blood cells (erythrocytes) in the blood, responsible for carrying oxygen from the lungs to all tissues. Measuring the hemoglobin level is the most important part of the complete blood count (Hemogram) test and is the primary parameter in diagnosing and determining the type of "Anemia".

Test Process and Preparation

Hemoglobin test and anemia evaluation.
What does low hemoglobin mean?

This is the condition commonly known as anemia. It can decrease due to iron deficiency, B12 deficiency, chronic bleeding, or kidney diseases. It causes constant fatigue, pale skin, and palpitations in the patient.

What causes elevated hemoglobin?

In situations where the body needs more oxygen, the bone marrow produces in excess. Hemoglobin levels are high in smokers, people living at high altitudes, and patients with lung diseases like COPD.

Is any special preparation required?

Since it is a routine blood test, it can be performed by drawing blood from the arm at any time of the day; a strict fast is not required, but when done as part of general panels, fasting in the morning is recommended.
