HLA-B27 Test

General Information About the Test

HLA-B27 is a genetic protein found on the surface of white blood cells. This test, performed to detect the presence of HLA-B27 in the blood, is requested to determine whether an individual has a genetic predisposition particularly to Ankylosing Spondylitis (spinal rheumatism), as well as reactive arthritis and other autoimmune rheumatic diseases.

Test Process and Preparation

HLA-B27 measurement and rheumatological evaluation process.
Does a positive test mean I am sick?

No. Testing positive for HLA-B27 does not definitively indicate that you have Ankylosing Spondylitis; it merely shows that your risk of contracting this disease (your genetic predisposition) is higher than that of the normal population.

For which complaints is it requested?

It is requested by rheumatology specialists for complaints of chronic pain that lasts for months, does not go away with rest, and causes stiffness, especially in the lower back and back region in the mornings.

What should be considered before giving blood for the test?

Because the test is a genetic analysis, it is not affected by fasting, being full, or the medications being used. It is performed using a standard blood sample drawn from the arm.
