IG (Immunoglobulin) Test

General Information About the Test

An immunoglobulin (Ig) test is a laboratory test that measures the blood levels of antibody proteins (IgA, IgG, IgM, IgE) produced by the body's immune system to fight infections (bacteria, viruses, fungi). It is requested to evaluate immunodeficiency, autoimmune diseases, chronic allergies, and certain blood cancers in people who experience frequent and severe infections.

Test Process and Preparation

Immunoglobulin types and measurement preparations.

IgG indicates the body's long-term, lasting immunity. IgM provides the first response to an active (ongoing) infection. IgE increases in allergic reactions and with parasites. IgA protects the respiratory and digestive systems.

Low levels of immunoglobulins indicate that the body's immune (defense) system is functioning inadequately. This condition can be congenital (hereditary) or can develop later due to diseases that cause kidney or protein loss.

It generally does not require a specific fast or preliminary preparation. All immunoglobulin classes can be measured with a standard blood sample drawn from the arm.
