Test Process and Preparation
IgG indicates the body's long-term, lasting immunity. IgM provides the first response to an active (ongoing) infection. IgE increases in allergic reactions and with parasites. IgA protects the respiratory and digestive systems.
Low levels of immunoglobulins indicate that the body's immune (defense) system is functioning inadequately. This condition can be congenital (hereditary) or can develop later due to diseases that cause kidney or protein loss.
It generally does not require a specific fast or preliminary preparation. All immunoglobulin classes can be measured with a standard blood sample drawn from the arm.
