It is mostly performed under ultrasound guidance to ensure the needle reaches the exact suspicious target. Once the target is entered, cells are withdrawn by creating a slight vacuum with the syringe. The procedure takes a few minutes and generally does not require numbing (local anesthesia).
No. There are unfounded beliefs among the public that a biopsy will "spread the cancer" or "aggravate the mass." Fine needle biopsy is extremely safe, and there is no evidence in medical literature that it spreads the tumor.
After the procedure, a small bandage is applied to the needle insertion site. Patients who do not use blood thinners can immediately return to their daily lives. A very slight bruising or tenderness on the skin is considered normal.
