Insulin Resistance Test (HOMA-IR)

General Information About the Test

The Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR) test is a metabolic evaluation that indicates how effectively the body can use the insulin hormone produced by the pancreas at the cellular level. "Fasting Blood Sugar" and "Fasting Insulin" values are measured from the patient's morning fasting blood and placed into a mathematical formula to calculate the resistance score. It is a fundamental diagnostic tool in the early diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes, weight loss difficulties, and polycystic ovary syndrome.

Test Process and Preparation

HOMA-IR score calculation and fasting rules.
What does a high insulin resistance mean?

It means that the cells have become desensitized (resistant) to the insulin hormone, which transports sugar in the blood into the cells to be converted into energy. The pancreas produces more insulin to break this resistance, which leads to an excess of insulin in the blood, appetite attacks, and rapid weight gain (especially around the belly).

What should a healthy HOMA-IR value be?

According to generally accepted medical references, the HOMA-IR value is expected to be below 2.5 to 2.7. A value above this indicates the presence of insulin resistance.

How long should one fast for the test?

For the test to be calculated accurately, it is mandatory for the patient to give blood in the morning and absolutely after a full overnight fast of at least 10-12 hours. Drinking water during the night is allowed.
