Capsule Endoscopy

General Information About the Test

Capsule Endoscopy is an innovative imaging method where the patient swallows a capsule the size of a large vitamin pill, equipped with a tiny camera, light source, and transmitter, with water. It is used to examine the entirety of the "small intestine," the longest part of the digestive system that standard endoscopy and colonoscopy devices cannot reach, and to diagnose hidden bleeding and conditions like Crohn's disease.

Test Process and Preparation

Capsule swallowing procedure and digestive system monitoring.
How does the capsule move through the stomach and intestines?

The capsule moves along thanks to the natural contraction movements (peristalsis) of the intestines, just like the food we eat. During this journey, it takes more than one photo per second and wirelessly transmits these photos to a small recording device worn on the patient's waist.

Is it necessary to retrieve the capsule or stay in the hospital?

The patient does not need to stay in the hospital. After swallowing the capsule, the patient returns to their daily life. The capsule is naturally excreted from the body via stool approximately 1-3 days after the procedure and cannot be reused (it is single-use).

Is bowel cleansing mandatory before the procedure?

Yes. In order for the camera to see the small intestine wall clearly, a bowel cleansing with special medications (laxatives) is required the day before the procedure, just as in a colonoscopy.
