Liver Function Tests

These enzymes are normally found inside liver cells. When the cells are damaged and broken down due to fatty liver, alcohol, medications, or viruses (hepatitis), the enzymes leak into the blood and their levels rise. This condition indicates active liver damage.

To ensure that values such as GGT, ALP, and Bilirubin are not affected by food, especially fatty foods, it is recommended that the tests be performed in the morning by drawing blood from the arm after an 8-10 hour fast.

Although blood tests largely indicate the presence of damage, additional examinations such as Ultrasonography or a Liver Biopsy may be needed to see the exact nature of the disease (for example, the degree of fatty liver or the onset of cirrhosis).
