Test Process and Preparation
It is similar to a normal gynecological examination. The device is not inserted into the body; it focuses on the cervix from the outside. Special solutions (acetic acid) that stain abnormal cells are applied to the cervix. The procedure is generally painless; only a momentary, very mild cramp may be felt while a biopsy is being taken.
If a biopsy was taken, it is normal to experience mild spotting-type bleeding or brown discharge for a few days after the procedure. It is recommended to avoid sexual intercourse, the use of tampons, and swimming in pools/the sea during the healing process (1-2 weeks).
Because menstrual bleeding will prevent a clear view of the cervix, a colposcopy procedure is not performed while menstruating. The most appropriate time is the days when bleeding has completely ended.
