Colposcopy

General Information About the Test

Colposcopy is the procedure of examining the cervix, vagina, and vulva in detail using a special illuminated magnifying system (colposcope device). It is generally applied by gynecologists when abnormal cells are detected in a routine Pap smear test or when high-risk virus types (such as Type 16 and 18) are found in an HPV DNA test, in order to visually examine precancerous lesions under magnification and take millimetric biopsies from suspicious areas.

Test Process and Preparation

Colposcopy examination and biopsy extraction procedures.

It is similar to a normal gynecological examination. The device is not inserted into the body; it focuses on the cervix from the outside. Special solutions (acetic acid) that stain abnormal cells are applied to the cervix. The procedure is generally painless; only a momentary, very mild cramp may be felt while a biopsy is being taken.

If a biopsy was taken, it is normal to experience mild spotting-type bleeding or brown discharge for a few days after the procedure. It is recommended to avoid sexual intercourse, the use of tampons, and swimming in pools/the sea during the healing process (1-2 weeks).

Because menstrual bleeding will prevent a clear view of the cervix, a colposcopy procedure is not performed while menstruating. The most appropriate time is the days when bleeding has completely ended.
