Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS)

General Information About the Test

Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS) is a procedure performed during early pregnancy, under ultrasound guidance, involving the extraction of a very small piece of tissue (chorionic villi) from the placenta (the baby's partner) using a fine needle or catheter. Because this tissue shares the same genetic makeup as the baby, it allows for the definitive diagnosis of genetic diseases such as Down Syndrome, Thalassemia (Mediterranean anemia), and SMA as early as the first months of pregnancy.

Test Process and Preparation

Timing of the CVS procedure and risk evaluation.
What is the difference from amniocentesis?

Amniocentesis is performed after the 16th week of pregnancy by taking a sample of the baby's fluid. CVS, however, is performed much earlier, between the 11th and 14th weeks of pregnancy, by taking a sample from the placenta, thereby offering the family the opportunity for an earlier and faster diagnosis.

Is there a risk of the procedure harming the baby or causing a miscarriage?

It is quite a safe procedure when performed under ultrasound guidance by experienced perinatology (high-risk pregnancy) specialists. Nevertheless, like any invasive procedure performed on the uterus, it carries a risk of miscarriage of approximately 1 in 300 (a very low probability).

Is the procedure painful, is anesthesia applied?

It is generally performed under local anesthesia by entering through the abdominal skin (or sometimes vaginally). Patients typically report feeling slight pressure and cramping during the procedure, but not severe pain. The duration of the procedure is quite short.
