Test Process and Preparation
Amniocentesis is performed after the 16th week of pregnancy by taking a sample of the baby's fluid. CVS, however, is performed much earlier, between the 11th and 14th weeks of pregnancy, by taking a sample from the placenta, thereby offering the family the opportunity for an earlier and faster diagnosis.
It is quite a safe procedure when performed under ultrasound guidance by experienced perinatology (high-risk pregnancy) specialists. Nevertheless, like any invasive procedure performed on the uterus, it carries a risk of miscarriage of approximately 1 in 300 (a very low probability).
It is generally performed under local anesthesia by entering through the abdominal skin (or sometimes vaginally). Patients typically report feeling slight pressure and cramping during the procedure, but not severe pain. The duration of the procedure is quite short.
