LDL Test

General Information About the Test

LDL (Low-Density Lipoprotein) is the type of lipid popularly known as "Bad Cholesterol." Its role is to take cholesterol from the liver and transport it to the cells. However, when the LDL level in the blood rises above normal, excess cholesterol accumulates on the vessel walls, forming "plaques" that lead to hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis), vascular occlusions, and consequently, fatal cardiovascular diseases such as heart attacks and strokes.

Test Process and Preparation

Measurement of bad cholesterol and assessment of heart attack risk.
What should a healthy LDL level be?

In healthy individuals without risk factors, the goal is for the LDL value to be below 130 mg/dL. However, in high-risk patients who have previously had a heart attack, have stents placed, or have diabetes, this target is desired to be much lower (generally below 70 mg/dL).

What causes elevated LDL?

One of the most important factors is genetic predisposition (familial high cholesterol). Aside from this, being overweight, having a sedentary lifestyle, and eating processed foods containing margarine or trans fats are factors that directly increase LDL.

Must one be strictly fasting before the test?

Yes. To ensure that the fat (lipid) molecules circulating in the blood are not directly and immediately affected by the food eaten, a strict fast of exactly 10-12 hours (water is permitted) after dinner must be maintained before the blood sample is taken.
