Leukocyte

General Information About the Test

Leukocytes (WBC - White Blood Cells) are the warrior cells that form the foundation of our body's immune (defense) system. They create a protective shield against bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites that enter the body. It is the most important parameter of the Complete Blood Count (Hemogram) test. Measuring the number of leukocytes in the blood is the first indicator of whether there is an infection or inflammation in the body.

Test Process and Preparation

WBC (White blood cell) measurement and infection evaluation.
What does an elevated leukocyte count mean?

An elevated leukocyte count (Leukocytosis) generally indicates that the body is fighting a bacterial infection. Additionally, it can be high in cases of physical trauma, severe stress, burns, tissue damage, and bone marrow diseases such as leukemia.

Is a low leukocyte count dangerous?

A low leukocyte count (Leukopenia) indicates that the body is left defenseless against infections (lowered immunity). Severe viral infections, chemotherapy treatment, autoimmune diseases, or bone marrow failure can lead to this condition.

How is the test performed?

It is performed using a standard tube of blood sample drawn from the arm. It can be measured at any time of the day and does not require a specific fast.
