Mammography

General Information About the Test

Mammography is the most fundamental and universally accepted gold standard radiological screening method for the early detection of breast cancer. Using a low dose of X-rays, a detailed film of the inside of the breast tissue is taken. It saves lives by catching millimetric masses (tumors) or precancerous microcalcifications in the breast years in advance, long before they can even be felt during a manual examination.

Test Process and Preparation

Mammography screening process and screening programs.

It is recommended that healthy women with no family history of breast cancer begin routine screenings at age 40 and repeat them annually (or at intervals deemed appropriate by a physician). For those carrying a genetic risk, this age is brought forward.

Compressing the breast between two plates thins the breast tissue, allowing the X-rays to pass through the tissue more easily, increasing image quality, and ensuring that the radiation dose the patient receives is much lower. The sensation of compression lasts for a few seconds and, although it causes a slight feeling of discomfort, it is tolerable.

The radiation dose used in modern digital mammography devices is extremely low (close to the radiation received during a standard airplane flight). The benefit provided by early diagnosis is hundreds of times greater than the risk of the very low dose of radiation received.
