Mediastinoscopy

General Information About the Test

Mediastinoscopy is the procedure of entering through a small incision made just below the neck (at the top of the breastbone) with a tube equipped with a light and camera (mediastinoscope) to examine and take a biopsy from the lymph nodes in the "Mediastinum" cavity, which is located between the lungs and includes the heart. It is particularly applied by Thoracic Surgery specialists in staging lung cancer to definitively determine whether the tumor has spread to the lymph nodes.

Test Process and Preparation

Mediastinoscopy surgery process and surgical preparation.
Is mediastinoscopy a major surgery?

It is a surgical procedure performed in the operating room under general anesthesia, but it is not a major (open) surgery. Because a very small (approximately 2-3 cm) incision is used, the recovery process is much faster compared to open lung surgeries.

Why is Mediastinoscopy preferred over EBUS?

Although EBUS (Endobronchial Ultrasound) is a less invasive method performed by entering through the mouth, Mediastinoscopy is the only definitive solution for reaching some inaccessible lymph node stations in the mediastinal cavity or in situations where large tissue samples need to be taken (sarcoidosis, lymphoma, etc.).

How much hospitalization is required after the procedure?

Generally, patients are kept under observation in the hospital for one night after the procedure and are discharged the next day. Only a small stitch is placed at the incision site.
