Breast Biopsy

General Information About the Test

A breast biopsy is the procedure of taking a sample from suspicious masses, calcifications, or tissue abnormalities detected in the breast during mammography or ultrasound scans for examination in a laboratory. Not every mass felt or visualized in the breast is cancer (most are benign structures like fibroadenomas or cysts); however, pathological examination, i.e., a biopsy, is the only way in the world to understand the definitive structure of the mass (whether it is benign or malignant).

Test Process and Preparation

Breast tissue biopsy techniques and procedure details.
How is a breast biopsy performed, is an incision made?

Today, breast biopsies are performed non-surgically (without incisions) with a needle by radiology specialists under the guidance of ultrasound or mammography. The Core Needle (Tru-Cut) and Vacuum-Assisted Biopsy (VAB) methods are most commonly used.

Is there pain during the procedure?

Before the procedure, the area to be biopsied and the subcutaneous tissue are completely numbed locally with a fine needle. Therefore, the patient does not feel pain during the procedure; they may only feel slight pressure and a sensation of touch.

When are the results ready and what happens afterwards?

Processing the extracted tissues in the pathology laboratory and examining them with special stains generally takes 5 to 7 business days. After the procedure, the patient can walk home; mild bruising on the skin that may last for a few days is normal.
