NEU (Neutrophil)

General Information About the Test

NEU (Neutrophils) are the most numerous and important subtype of white blood cells (leukocytes) in our immune system. They are the pioneer warrior cells that make the first response against foreign bacteria entering the body, destroying them by "engulfing" them. Counted in the Complete Blood Count (Hemogram) panel, they determine whether the body is fighting an acute (sudden onset) bacterial infection or an inflammatory condition.

Test Process and Preparation

Neutrophil count and bacterial infection diagnosis.

Usually, in severe bacterial infections such as pneumonia, appendicitis, or urinary tract infections, the body rapidly produces neutrophils and their number in the blood increases. It can also be elevated in cases of severe burns, tissue trauma, and intense stress.

A low neutrophil count leaves the patient completely defenseless against bacterial infections. It most commonly occurs after chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments, in bone marrow diseases (Leukemia), or as a result of severe viral infections (Hepatitis, HIV) suppressing the bone marrow.

It is not a separate test. It is automatically provided as a % (percentage) and an absolute number (absolute neutrophil count - ANC) within the Hemogram (Complete Blood Count) test, which is performed via a normal blood draw from a vein.
