General Information About the Test
Test Process and Preparation
Usually, in severe bacterial infections such as pneumonia, appendicitis, or urinary tract infections, the body rapidly produces neutrophils and their number in the blood increases. It can also be elevated in cases of severe burns, tissue trauma, and intense stress.
A low neutrophil count leaves the patient completely defenseless against bacterial infections. It most commonly occurs after chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments, in bone marrow diseases (Leukemia), or as a result of severe viral infections (Hepatitis, HIV) suppressing the bone marrow.
It is not a separate test. It is automatically provided as a % (percentage) and an absolute number (absolute neutrophil count - ANC) within the Hemogram (Complete Blood Count) test, which is performed via a normal blood draw from a vein.
