NST Test

General Information About the Test

The NST (Non-Stress Test) is a fundamental pregnancy monitoring method that simultaneously records the baby's heartbeat (fetal heart rate), the baby's movements in the womb, and uterine contractions on a graph paper during the final months of pregnancy. It is applied to evaluate whether the baby is lacking oxygen (in distress) and to see if labor pains (risk of premature birth) have begun.

Test Process and Preparation

Connecting to the NST device and monitoring the baby's heart rhythm.

If there is no risky condition (bleeding, water breaking, decreased baby movements), it is routinely applied weekly or biweekly during doctor visits starting from the 32nd to 34th weeks of pregnancy.

Babies have sleep cycles of 20-40 minutes in the womb. If the baby is sleeping when you are connected to the device, your doctor or midwife may ask you to have a full stomach, consume fruit juice/sweets, or apply a very slight vibration/sound stimulus to your abdomen to wake the baby.

The expectant mother lies down on a comfortable bed. Probes are attached to her abdomen with two belts (one measures the baby's heart, the other measures contractions). It does not contain any radiation or electricity, works entirely with sound waves (ultrasound logic), and poses no harm to the baby. The procedure takes 20-30 minutes.
