Test Process and Preparation
The test is conducted in a specially designed soundproof (silent) booth where no external noise can enter. The patient wears headphones. The audiometrist sends sounds at various tones from the device, and the patient is asked to press a button in their hand the moment they hear the sound (even if it is very faint).
In addition to the normal headphone (air conduction) test, sound is also delivered via a small vibrating device placed on the bone behind the ear (bone conduction). This procedure is done to distinguish whether the hearing loss originates from the eardrum/middle ear or directly from the nerves in the inner ear.
It can be performed on children who are old enough to understand commands and press a button (generally 4-5 years and older) in the form of a game (Play Audiometry). For younger infants, the BERA/ABR test, which does not require patient participation, is administered.
