PCT Test

General Information About the Test

PCT (Procalcitonin) is a protein synthesized by the thyroid gland. In healthy individuals, it is found at very low levels in the blood. When a severe and systemic bacterial infection (sepsis or blood poisoning) develops in the body, procalcitonin levels rise extraordinarily fast within hours. Therefore, it is a far superior and earlier-warning marker than the CRP test for distinguishing whether a patient's infection is viral or bacterial and for deciding on antibiotic treatment.

Test Process and Preparation

Procalcitonin (PCT) measurement and sepsis (blood poisoning) monitoring.

Sepsis is an emergency and fatal condition where the infection enters the bloodstream and can lead to organ failure. While a blood culture takes days to produce a result, the PCT test plays a life-saving role by indicating within a few hours whether the infection has entered the bloodstream (sepsis).

No. The biggest advantage of the PCT test is that it does not yield high results in viral infections (Covid-19, flu, cold, etc.). If the patient has a fever but a low PCT value, the unnecessary use of antibiotics is prevented.

It is measured in the laboratory using a standard tube of blood drawn from a vein. Because it is requested in emergency situations, fasting or having eaten does not matter.
